SILENCE AND STILLNESS – Adrian Russi

Silence is not simply the absence of noises and sounds, silence is something of its own.
Stillness in dance is not simply the absence of movement or waiting until the movement continues,
stillness is something of its own. Steve Paxton called it the Small Dance: the small movements our
body continuously and autonomously does in order to maintain a position, as long as we are not
simply lying flat on the floor – and even then, for example, breathing is the cause of the smallest
movements. If you listen deeply, the Small Dance is something very rich and at the same time
chaotic, meaning improvised and unplanned. To me, the Small Dance is the real source of the big
movements. Already in the Small Dance, mass, gravity, momentum and the autonomous handling of
our body with the situation are central, while I primarily take on an observing and following role. I
see Contact Improvisation as the continuous alternation respectively overlapping of the Small Dance
and the larger, spatial movements, which I sometimes also call the Big Dance. Impatiently waiting for
the dance to finally begin or continue is not really an option – but I know the frustration when my
dance partner is too active and not willing or able to listen so that our two Small Dances can tune in.
The pauses in the music or the silence that appears in a previously noisy jam space is always balm for
my soul – it can open up new inner and outer spaces

L’immobilità nella danza non è semplicemente l’assenza di movimento o l’attesa che il movimento riprenda;

CONTACT SILENCE

CONTACT SILENCE retreats is a social promotion project of LIBERA MENTE APS association

We firmly believe that contact improvisation holds great potential on a social and communicative level and carries within it an unequivocal educational message. In addition to being the vanguard of the natural and authentic movement, it teaches respect for one’s body and the other, nourishing the fundamental need of the human being to physical contact, gives joy and well-being to those who practice it, reconnects man to his creativity and the primordial dimension of the game.
