PARADOX AND EQUANIMITY – Michela Fabbri

On the last day of my second CS Retreat, I made this little drawing.

I was amazed by the volume of both real and internal noises that had occupied my attention in the days spent in silence.

I often pause to think about the literal meaning of a word and savor the paradox that emerges when I compare meaning with reality.

The silence I encountered in these experiences is peculiar: it is not an absolute state, but rather an agreement between individuals who dedicate a specific time and their bodies to a common mission, consisting of omitting unnecessary words and prioritizing inner and outer listening. The space created becomes a powerful slide into the beloved practice of Contact Improvisation.

This time, thanks to the time spent outdoors, we navigated through a silence rich with environmental and animal sounds; with the help of the lazy summer heat and the group’s energies, it was also an undisciplined silence. I still smile thinking of the roar of farm machinery rising from the valley during morning meditation, the chickens from the nearby farm singing as they laid eggs during our half-hour of silence in the circle, and some whispered verbal exchanges on surreal topics in the room just before the afternoon siesta.

Despite this disconnect between the word “silence” and reality, the positive impact of this agreement on CI practice remains tangible to me. Outside the platform/room, the focus is on how sounds and thoughts flow through us when distractions are fewer than usual, and it then shifts to the body and movement, which can finally become the primary means of communication. I feel that the dances here are closer to improvisation, it seems like we allow ourselves more, we explore more. We apply a greater sense of equanimity to what happens on the platform/in the room, just like the one I instinctively used with the tractor sounds, embracing them in our collective silence.

CONTACT SILENCE

CONTACT SILENCE retreats is a social promotion project of LIBERA MENTE APS association

We firmly believe that contact improvisation holds great potential on a social and communicative level and carries within it an unequivocal educational message. In addition to being the vanguard of the natural and authentic movement, it teaches respect for one’s body and the other, nourishing the fundamental need of the human being to physical contact, gives joy and well-being to those who practice it, reconnects man to his creativity and the primordial dimension of the game.
